The hardest part of going solar is not the sales pitch or the installation. It is the moment the crew packs up and drives off. That handoff is where solar ownership begins, and it is where most post-install complaints originate. Permission to operate (PTO) can lag the install by weeks, monitoring is a separate setup that installers frequently leave half-finished, and warranty responsibility is quietly split across the module manufacturer, the inverter manufacturer, and the installer. Print the checklist at the end of this page, have it in hand before the crew leaves, and work through every box. It is the single highest-value thing you can do as a new solar owner.

1. Why the handoff goes wrong

The post-install complaint pattern is remarkably consistent across homeowner reports: the crew disappears the moment the panels are on the roof, PTO drags for weeks with no status update, the monitoring app is either never set up or set up under the installer's account, and no one makes clear who owns which problem once the truck leaves. Homeowners report not knowing whether a given issue, an inverter fault, a monitoring dropout, or a slow PTO, is the installer's problem, the utility's problem, or theirs. That ambiguity is the root cause of most post-install dissatisfaction, and it is entirely preventable with a disciplined handoff. 2. What PTO Is, and Why It's the Gate

Permission to operate is the utility's authorization to energize your system and connect it to the grid. Until PTO is granted, your system must stay off; this is both a contractual requirement (your interconnection agreement) and a utility rule. Many jurisdictions require an AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) inspection (the local building/electrical permit sign-off) before or alongside PTO. The installer submits the interconnection application; the utility reviews it, often inspects the install or the paperwork, and then grants PTO. The timeline reality is the part most homeowners underestimate: PTO isutility-dependent and typically takes one to eight weeks after install. That range is wide on purpose, because utilities genuinely run at very different speeds. Treat any installer promise of "PTO in a few days" with skepticism; the installer does not control the utility's queue.

3. The PTO timeline by utility type

Who your utility is shapes how long PTO takes.Investor-owned utilities (IOUs like Pacific Gas & Electric, Duke, Con Edison) process the most applications and often have the longest queues, though some run fast-track or small-generator interconnection programs that shorten the path for residential systems under a size threshold. Municipal utilities and cooperatives vary widely; some are fast because they are small and local, others are slow because they lack dedicated interconnection staff. 4. What to Demand Before the Crew Leaves: The Checklist

This is the irreplicable asset on this page. The checklist below has fifteen items in three groups: Paperwork & PTO, Monitoring & hardware, and Service & ownership. Do not let the crew leave without working through it. The bargaining position you hold on install day evaporates three weeks later, once the truck is long gone and your emails are going to a general inbox.

5. Monitoring: what "set up" means

A monitoring app (common platforms include Enphase, SolarEdge, and Tesla, plus generic inverter apps, named here as examples only) shows live production, system status, and alerts. The single most important setup detail, and the one installers get wrong most often, is thatthe monitoring account must be created in YOUR name with YOUR email, not the installer's. If the account lives under the installer's email, you cannot see your own production, you cannot get alerts, and when the installer goes quiet you lose access to the very system you paid for. Before the crew leaves, confirm: the account is in your name with your email; the system is claimed and linked to your account; and live production data is showing on your phone, on the driveway, before they leave. 6. Reading your inverter

Know where your inverter is and how to read its status lights before the crew leaves. As a general pattern, a steady green light means normal operation, a blinking light means the unit is communicating, and an amber or red light indicates a fault, but always check your specific manual, since manufacturers differ. If you see a fault, screenshot the code, read the manual, and call the installer. Do NOT climb on the roof. Ask for the walkthrough while the crew is still there: where the inverter is, what each light means, and what a normal operating screenshot looks like. Save a photo of normal operation so you have a baseline to compare against later. Confirm there is no firmware update pending.

7. Who Owns Which Problem: The Handoff Table

The most useful single artifact after the checklist is a clear map of which problem belongs to whom. Warranty and service responsibility is split three ways: module manufacturer, inverter manufacturer, and installer, and the split is not obvious in the moment. 8. The Money Items: Final Payment and Panel R&R

Two money items belong on install day. First, final payment: tie it to PTO being granted AND monitoring confirmed live in your name, but verify what your contract says before you sign, not after. Some contracts make final payment due on substantial completion of install (before PTO), others tie it to PTO. If your contract allows holding payment until PTO + monitoring are confirmed, that is a position worth keeping; if it does not, you at least want to know that in advance. How long does solar PTO take?

Permission to operate is utility-dependent and typically takes one to eight weeks after the panels are installed and inspected. Investor-owned utilities in high-volume states can sit at the longer end; smaller municipal utilities and co-ops vary widely. The installer files the interconnection application and the utility grants PTO. Can I turn on my solar system before PTO?

No. Operating the system before the utility grants permission to operate violates both your interconnection agreement and utility rules, and it can create a safety and grid-synchronization issue. The system is designed to stay off until the utility confirms interconnection is approved and, where required, the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) inspection has passed. The do-not-operate-before-PTO rule is standard; if your contract does not state it explicitly, ask for it in writing so the expectation is unambiguous.

Who is responsible for getting PTO?

What is a solar monitoring app?

A solar monitoring app is the portal (Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla, or your inverter manufacturer's app) that shows live production, system status, and alerts for your array. What should I do if my installer stops responding after install?

Classify each warranty as OEM-backed (survives installer failure) or installer-backed (does not), because that distinction decides whether the manufacturer will honor a claim directly.
