Plug-in solar is exactly what it sounds like: solar panels that plug into a standard household outlet. No rooftop crew, no installer sales pitch, no $30,000 contract. Germany's "balcony solar" boom proved the concept at national scale, and since Utah passed the first US plug-in solar law in 2025, ten states now have plug-in solar laws per the Bright Saver tracker. Here is what plug-in solar is, what kits cost, whether it is legal where you live, and whether the savings are real.

What is plug-in solar?

A plug-in solar kit is one to four panels paired with a small grid-interactive inverter, mounted on a balcony rail, patio, or yard stand, and connected by plugging into a standard 120V household outlet (larger kits can be hardwired to 240V by an electrician). The inverter synchronizes with your home's AC power and feeds solar electricity into your own circuits as it is produced, slowing your meter. There is no rooftop installation, no drilling into shingles, and in most cases no electrician. You will also see it called balcony solar or plug-and-play solar.

The concept exploded in Germany first. Balcony panels there became so popular that they added roughly 10% more solar capacity to the German grid within months (a New York Times-reported figure quoted by Grist in April 2026), pushed along by rules that let renters register small systems with a simple form. US states are now writing their own versions of that playbook, and the r/solar and r/SolarDIY communities document new builds weekly.

The timing matters. The Section 25D residential tax credit expired December 31, 2025, and the Section 48E construction-start deadline passed July 4, 2026, so a new rooftop purchase gets no federal credit. What plug-in solar kits cost

Mainstream kits from EcoFlow, Anker Solix, Jackery, and similar brands run from under $1,000 for single-panel starter setups to roughly $5,000 for 800W-class balcony arrays with premium microinverters and mounting hardware. What moves the price: panel wattage and count, the quality of the UL 1741-listed inverter (the component that matters most), mounting hardware for rails vs. ground stands, and whether a battery is bundled.

Compare that to rooftop solar, where a typical installed system runs in the $30,000 class. That gap is the entire pitch. A Utah legislator who sponsored the first plug-in solar law framed it plainly: the law is for "anyone who wants a little solar but does not want to pay $30,000 for a roof install."

What you can realistically offset

Honest expectations: a balcony-class kit typically offsets 10-30% of a typical electricity bill. An 800W array produces on the order of 1-1.3 MWh per year depending on sun, which is meaningful money in high-rate states and pocket change in cheap-power states. Is plug-in solar legal in your state? The 2026 map

Until 2025, the honest answer everywhere in the US was "gray area." Grid-feeding devices sat in a gap between appliance rules and utility interconnection rules, and utilities' concern was legitimate: line-worker safety on circuits that could be backfed by devices they did not know about (Grist covered the standoff in April 2026). Utah changed that. HB 340, signed May 2025 and effective May 7, 2025, made Utah the first state in the nation to explicitly legalize plug-in solar, with no utility approval needed for qualifying systems. Plug-in solar safety: the non-negotiables

A plug-in kit is a grid-feeding device, so safety comes down to one component: the inverter. Buy kits whose inverter is UL 1741-listed, the standard for grid-interactive inverters. UL 1741 requires anti-islanding: within seconds of the grid going down, the inverter stops feeding power, so a utility worker repairing a "dead" line is never exposed to your balcony panel's output. That backfeed risk is exactly what utilities raised when these laws were debated, and it is a fair concern answered by listing requirements.

Two more rules of thumb from the r/SolarDIY community and the National Electrical Code (NEC): mount the array so panels and cabling comply with NEC balcony/wiring practice (secured runs, weatherproof connectors, no trip hazards), and never daisy-chain the kit through a power strip or an extension cord that is not rated for the load: plug directly into a wall outlet on a dedicated circuit. Note that rapid shutdown, the rooftop code requirement that lets firefighters kill a roof array, follows a different code path for plug-in kits; the UL 1741 anti-islanding function plays that role for outlet systems.

Savings math: plug-in kit vs rooftop

What does a small array save? Set that against rooftop: a $30,000-class installed system that now gets no federal credit (25D expired; 48E's window closed July 4, 2026). Rooftop still wins on total offset: a full array can zero out a bill while a balcony kit trims 10-30%. But on dollars-in versus dollars-out, plug-in solar does not need a tax credit to make sense. Who plug-in solar is for

Three groups benefit most. Renters: for the first time there is a solar product you can take with you, as long as your state's law allows it and your landlord does not object. Credit-constrained homeowners: if a $30,000 loan is not on the table, a sub-$1,000 kit still earns a real return with zero financing. Testers: people who want to measure their sun exposure and savings appetite before committing to a roof project.

Is plug-in solar legal in my state?
It depends. Nine states had enacted plug-in solar laws as of September 2026: Utah, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Virginia, plus New Jersey (passed the legislature, awaiting the governor's signature at our last check), and the Bright Saver tracker counts ten states passed nationally. Roughly 30 more states plus DC have drafted bills since Utah's HB 340. If your state is not in the passed table above, there is no plug-in solar law yet, so check with your utility before plugging in.
Do I need a permit for plug-in solar?
In states with plug-in solar laws, the whole point is that qualifying kits skip the utility interconnection approval process (Utah's HB 340 is the model). Where no law exists, treat it as "ask first": call your utility and local electrical inspector, because a grid-feeding device may still fall under interconnection rules. Hardwired 240V kits almost always need an electrician and, in most jurisdictions, a permit regardless of state law.
Will plug-in solar cut my bill by 30%?
It can, but 10-30% of a typical bill is the honest planning range for a balcony-class kit. The variables are kit wattage, your sun exposure, and your electricity rate. Yes, if the kit uses a UL 1741-listed grid-interactive microinverter. No, and neither does new rooftop solar for homeowners who buy their system. Can renters use plug-in solar?
